The fight that we had to put up in order to come in for the induction last night was time, anxiety, and energy well-spent. Baby Jason is here and he's ok, but we feel like we just barely made it through this one by the thinnest of margins. Angel was dilating just fine, her water broke, the epidural went well, she rode out the contractions until 5cm. The first problem was that there was significant meconium in the amniotic fluid. We began preparations for this, since this can be a very serious complication if the baby aspirates the meconium. Then the labor and delivery nurse noticed that Jason's heart rate was decelerating with each contraction. I hadn't noticed the change, but then we saw one that dipped into the 70s (his normal rate was in the 140s). The doctor was paged and the nurse gave us a 30-minute heads-up that a C-section was imminent. So, we prepared for an 'urgent' C-section, not an emergency one.
As if this weren't terrifying enough, when the doctor pulled Jason out, he had the cord around his neck, and had strong indications that he had aspirated the meconium. His Apgar at 1-minute was a 3 (on a 10-point scale) due to his respiratory distress. It took FOREVER (it seemed) to hear him from the other room (where a team of doctors and nurses were working on him) screaming, and boy was he mad. His 5-minute Apgar was an 8.
Long-story short for now, he will spend the next 3 days in the NICU while his respiratory status improves (it already has recovered signifcantly) - he also has a slight pneumothorax (air pocket in his chest outside of his lungs) which needs to improve.
We just now received enough understanding and clarity on this to write. He was born at 11:09 am and weighs 7 pounds, 1 ounce. He is a long 20.5 inches. We have to be thankful that he is the healthiest looking baby in the NICU (although the nurses and doctors assured us that there is rarely a more dire case as meconium aspiration). As it appears now, the meconium didn't get past his vocal chords.
Poor Angel is recovering and has yet to see the little pork chop... and we're just now daring to smile...
